LA UNIÓ ESPORTIVA SANT ANDREU, COMMITTED TO YOUNG MIGRANTS

The Unió Esportiva Sant Andreu is one of the historical football clubs in Barcelona. A club that, beyond being recognized for its long sporting history, is also known for its great social commitment.

More than one hundred years of football history and social commitment

After several years promoting and collaborating in different activities and social projects to support refugees and migrants in Barcelona, since the beginning of the 21/22 season, the Unió Esportiva Sant Andreu is also an essential collaborator in the social-sports project of the Alcantara Family Foundation to promote the personal development and social integration of young people in vulnerable situations: Alcantara Team.

In addition, the Unió Esportiva Sant Andreu also participates in the development of the Welcome League project of the Unió de Federacions Esportives de Catalunya together with the Alcantara Family Foundation.

These collaborations make it possible for 50 young migrants and refugees to enjoy fantastic facilities every week where they can practice their favorite sport.

Beyond football

“The purpose of the club is beyond sport, beyond football,” says Manuel Camino, President of the Unió Esportiva Sant Andreu.

“We want football excellence, logically. Parents entrust their children to us, to play football. But we are the ones who want to show these children and these parents that there are other things that children have to learn. The real target is them. That they take into account that there are people in need, that they exist, and that they will exist, and that they have to learn to respect and help them ».

Manuel Carmino trusts that the club’s social projects would not exist without Josep Hormigo, head of the club’s social area, with whom he has worked for more than forty years.

«There are many people who are dedicated to social matters, but in football clubs it is different. It is so important because it is reflected even abroad, in all football issues, coaches… It is important that everyone realizes what we do from Sant Andreu, and thus, you make people want to commit, to help. This year we have involved Diego Morata, for example, in many Club events. That can make people want to get involved”, says Josep Hormigo.

Una apuesta de futuro

Manuel Camino wants the club’s social area to continue to grow in the long term: “What we do in the social area, and especially with refugees, we want to leave it so marked, that the day that neither Josep nor I are here, let it be a facet of the club that cannot be removed.

From the Alcantara Family Foundation we collect the words of the President and the Head of the social area, hoping that the social spirit of the Unió Esportiva Sant Andreu spreads and that in the future it can become one of the pillars of sports clubs.

Because a football field is much more than a sports space, it is a place to meet, meet and enjoy moments of joy, exchange and learning. This is, every week, the Narcís Sala for young people who participate in the Alcantara Team and the Welcome League.
